About The Artist

My name is Shiloh Ahrens

Throughout my years, my perception and understanding of art have fluctuated, yet I believe the core of being an artist is to capture meaning behind reality through a medium. Art has a wide range of capabilities, but in my field of photography, art is captured through pieces of reality. As a photographer, art is not only created but also found—you find it all around you, in the simplest or grandest things. I love looking at one room and noticing all the beautiful moments that can be shot and the unnoticed corners that are radiant in their stillness. What I do is create, capture, and build scenes.

Artists are the ones who have the mind and ability to put an unfathomable idea onto a canvas or capture it with a camera. We photographers can take what's real and emphasize it while also having the capability to create new worlds through composites. The beauty and creativity of art flow from the mind of the individual, and one needs to have an eye for it. As an artist, I strive to tell stories with my pictures, capturing reality, ideas, and dreams in their purest form. Every person, every landscape, and every old, used item has a story full of meaning. As artists it is our duty to draw attention to what we want seen, we are the ones with the power to cause reflection within oneself.

Most importantly, art is a universal language; anyone from any background can look at and see meaning in a piece of art. It's also diverse, every idea can be perceived in its own new way, and through each perspective we can know and understand the uniqueness of each person next to us.

The Future

Looking towards the future, my goal is to be a freelance photographer. I want to cultivate my skills to the point where I can sell my images to decorators and conduct shoots to capture beautiful moments of life. Currently, I do photoshoots with clients and have interned as part of the media team at Veterans Legal Institute.  Although I do not plan to pursue a career in art, I still want it to be intertwined in my life. Through these experiences, it has become clear to me the importance of capturing moments and telling people’s stories—being the person who listens, cares, and shares those stories so others can benefit.

My dream is to go to California Baptist University or the University of San Diego for architecture and afterwards serve in the Marines. I’m interested in this major because it combines artistic design with math and structure.

The principles of being an artist and having an artistic perspective will always stick with me and give me the opportunity to be creative and appreciative of the world around me. As I go through new experiences and meet new people, I want to learn about them to capture their essence and continue forward with appreciation for both the subject and the art. With my art, I want to make people reflect on the past, tell people’s stories, and brighten someone’s day. I want the world to be more appreciative through what I can do as a photographer and as a person.
